Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.
The former head of state was convicted of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than over two decades in jail, but he was staying under confinement pending court reviews.
Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a precautionary step after fresh information emerged.
This encompassed attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a public vigil that could enable a chance to flee".
Judicial Records Show Flight Fears
In a filing authorising the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's "intention to break the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his escape.
This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his child.
His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a senator, called for a assembly of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Will you battle for your nation, or see it all from your phone there on your settee? I invite you to fight with us."
He said the demonstration would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of the judge's decision was the possibility of Bolsonaro's "relocation to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a history of arranging to ask for protection through a embassy office", a statement said.
The legal document underscores that the US embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is positioned around 13km from his dwelling.
International Reactions
Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative United States President Trump, prompting him to implement a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.
The former president is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in Brazil's capital city and will have a custody hearing on Sunday.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with tracking devices.
They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he demanded regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.
Context of Sentencing
Bolsonaro was convicted of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the national vote to his ideological adversary, Lula.
High Court judges said that he was aware of a scheme which included plans to murder the current president and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.
The conspiracy was stopped because it couldn't obtain the support of the armed forces officials. Lula was took office without incident on January 1st, 2023.
But a following week, on 8 January, many Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed official structures in the federal district, Brasília.
The police intervened and around 1,500 people were detained.
The justices found that the demonstrators had been incited by him whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, restore order and bring him back to power.
At the period, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.
He was also barred from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.
The former president called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the next presidential race.
