President Trump along with President Gustavo Petro have intensified the volume of their exchange, increasing strains in their relations following US forces targeted Venezuela in an operation to oust the leader of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro from office.
"He has drug factories and cocaine factories and is not going to be doing it very long," Trump added.
Rising Rhetoric coupled with Claims
Speaking to the press on Sunday, the US president suggested comparable military action towards the South American nation, stating the country is “very sick too” and led by a sick man involved in producing the drug and trafficking it to the United States."
Although Colombia stands as the leading producer of cocaine, there is no evidence that President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is in any way connected to the illicit industry.
A Deteriorating Partnership
Colombia has long been a key ally of the US in the struggle against drug trafficking and enjoyed wide political approval in the US capital, but relations have deteriorated markedly since Trump assumed the presidency.
Colombia’s illicit drug economy is predominantly run by guerrilla factions such as one major cartel, the National Liberation Army (ELN) and renegade units of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), the majority of whose members laid down arms after a 2016 peace deal.
Colombia's Firm Response
Upon being questioned if military intervention similar to Venezuela was being considered against his country, Trump responded: "It sounds good to me personally."
President Petro, an ex-guerrilla fighter who left armed struggle decades ago, rejected Trump's claims. "I am no an illegitimate leader and certainly not a drug trafficker," he affirmed.
"Trump speaks uninformed. Cease defaming me," he posted in a message.
"If US bombs target rural communities, they will become numerous insurgents in the hills. And if they detain the president, whom many of the country admires and supports, they will provoke the powerful force of the nation," he admonished.
From Fighter to President
He passed some years as a young man belonging in the left-wing M-19 armed organization although reports indicate he did not participated in combat. After demobilizing, he took part in drafting the nation's constitution in 1991 and eventually served as a prominent senator. He held the office of mayor of the capital city prior to his election the nation's highest office.
"I pledged to abstain from using a gun ... but for the homeland I will take up arms again," he affirmed.
Increased Security and Cross-Political Condemnation
Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that the president’s security detail was strengthened.
A segment of Colombia’s political right have sided with Trump's stance, but voices spanning the political spectrum have rejected the threats of an invasion on Colombia.
Political and Financial Strains
American authorities cancelled the president's entry visa subsequent to he encouraged American soldiers to disobey any illegal orders. In October, the US enacted economic restrictions against the president, his wife and several associates.
Simultaneously as the US increased its military presence in the region and bombing alleged narcotics traffickers to put pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro, the US executed operations on boats off the Pacific coast off the Colombian coast.
