Larian Studios Announce a New Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG Yet

The speculation surrounding The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer featuring intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very unleashing of hell.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian stated ahead of time that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This phrasing implies that the team is likely designing a faster-paced experience as opposed to another turn-based title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it sparked the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and complex character building—elements that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of specialized paths that are viable by choosing a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully permissive, enabling players to experiment both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be completed in a variety of manners, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you recalled something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is this design philosophy that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can look forward to a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
