Whenever a prominent awards ceremony draws close, there’s always a clamor for the addition of new categories to recognize unsung work and satisfy the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.
Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything that year
- A different innovative game missed out during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
