They're Repeating to America What They Executed within Christianity

The Trump movement's most illuminating and defining moments – not its most significant, nor cruelest, nor most hazardous, nor most senseless, but potentially its most enlightening – came earlier this autumn. Over the span of multiple weeks, the American president began displaying the public his intentions for a lavish reception room double the dimensions than the White House and then began independently demolishing the East Wing to construct it.

He has committed acts 10,000 times as bad – the present calculation of deaths resulting from his reductions to USAID is 600,000 and rising, and recently research predicted his petroleum strategies would cause deaths an additional 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No previous president would have risked – genuinely, no former commander would have imagined – independently wrecking major areas of the White House to build a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of multiple America's wealthiest, the majority of whom have business with public institutions.

We went from 'the humble will receive the planet' to 'the humble will perish of cholera'

As disorienting as it is to observe the president try to upend the established notion about democracy and replace it with its direct contrary, there remains a substantial portion among Americans who should not find it totally unfamiliar. That encompasses people such as ourselves – within elder demographics close to half – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.

We have witnessed over the years as politically conservative religious groups transformed the Christ we were raised with into the complete reverse of who we understood him to be. Essentially, they turned a figure of love into a symbol of hostility who endorses specifically the brutality that he denounced in the Gospel; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, over decades as opposed to months, yet it remains disconcerting in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.

A Damaging Christianity Takes Hold

Therefore allow me to outline the Jesus from my childhood, since in theory Christ is the focus of Christian religion, and given that the fastest-growing cadre among Americans might have little sense regarding him since they are atheists or uncertain individuals or spiritual independents. I have no problem with any of these traditions, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that there are pearls of substantial value in the Christian story.

It is unquestionably definitely not the narrative of an authoritative monarch appearing; rather, a baby is born to parents without shelter in a storage space, who need to rapidly escape to a different country to avoid undercover officers. The child matures in modest conditions, a laboring woodworker; his doctrine is about love for fellow humans, particularly for the disadvantaged – and not a sentimental love, but practical compassion, shown by providing food and housing. Jesus' answer to aggression is to offer the opposite cheek – not as an act of passive acceptance, but as a means to instruct the aggressor; his crime policy is that if an individual takes your jacket you must offer the person your additional clothing as well.

The apparent and direct reality that the Savior from scripture requests a form of profound affection focused on the impoverished is what has always made Christianity something of a scandalous religion: appealing to the masses, but owing to its inherent radicalness demanding to be contained. During the 1950s it was controlled by dilution – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it basically sanctified existing conditions.

A Conflict for the Highest Among Us

Therefore I have felt inspired to witness the persistent defiance to Trump arise during the previous year. It has served as great solace to help build the initiative that has taken to the streets through repeated demonstrations, and seems to have inspired citizens to participate in significant amounts in the off-year elections. We will need to continue it, and in the same spirit, displaying national flags throughout each rally and appeals to the highest qualities of American history.

We shall be interrogated ... regarding how you welcomed the stranger? Did you accept these individuals and embrace them or reject?

The nation is most protected, to put it differently, through connection to the best in US heritage, exactly as the Christian faith is most protected by reference to that which renders it unique and magnificent, which is the example of Jesus. In all circumstances does it imply feigning the worst regarding America and Christianity was nonexistent; it means both modesty and faith, a blend that genuine US believers should be comfortable with.
